Cold and Wet Weather is just around the corner (We Hope!)

As winter approaches, and the rain begins… is your car ready?

Some of the things you want to check on your vehicle before the rain arrives are:

-Are your windshield wipers in good shape? The hot Sacramento sun literally ‘bakes’ your wiper blades. Street Tech keeps most wiper blades in stock and will put them on for you free of charge so you can clearly see the road ahead.

-How do your tires look? Ever hear the expression Where the Rubber Meets the Road? It means where it really counts, and the same is true of your tires. Good tire tread helps squeeze water out between your tires and the pavement. Without sufficient tread your car can hydroplane, and you could lose control of the vehicle.

-Planning on going ‘up the hill’? If you plan on driving over the Sierra’s to Reno or Tahoe, you will want to make sure your car’s cooling system is up to par. The proper mixture of coolant can keep your engine from freezing to death. Think of the last time you left a soda in the freezer, the same thing could happen to your engine.

If you aren’t sure if your car is ready for the El Nino winter… stop on by Street wet winter driving visability, safetyTech and we will make sure you’re ready for the wet road ahead.

Is the love gone? Can you find it again?

Everybody loves a new car! That feeling driving off the dealer lot basking in that new car smell! Oh, What Pleasure!

Many of us get that urge to trade in the car that we’ve had for years for something shiny, new and younger…  but there are many benefits in keeping that older car, and perhaps restoring some of the love you once felt.

Here we have listed some of the benefits of an older car. This stuff you probably won’t see in any slick TV commercials.

1) No Car Payment. Yep that’s right, imagine what fun you can have with that $500 a month. Even factoring for the occasional repair cost on an older car, you will almost never pay anything close to what you pay on an annual car payment.

2) Lower insurance rates and car registration fees. More money you get to keep in your pocket.

3) Someone ding your door? Who cares! Not worrying about minor dings and scratches is one of the most underrated benefits of owning an older car.

Even if the love is starting to ebb, there are a few things you can do to keep the love going a little longer.

1) Maybe there is an annoying vibration or noise killing the love. We may be able to fix it. We just recently helped a long time customer restore the love in his 10+ year old car. Turns out the vibration is something that if left alone would have destroyed his engine anyway, so that’s a double win!

2) Headlights looking a little cloudy or yellow? We can refer you to a reputable body shop that can get you seeing and looking crystal clear!

3) Perhaps the sound system needs a little restoration. Car speakers are generally made of paper, think about how well paper survives in the Sacramento heat. A new set of speakers could get you humming a happy tune again.

4) Get the car detailed. There may be a little more beauty left under that dust or dirt. Waxing can sometimes even remove minor scratches. A good scrubbing could do wonders!

Now chances are, eventually your going to need a new car, but remember, every month you keep your old one, you are saving money, and hopefully saving some of it as a down-payment for a new car.

In the meantime, let us at Street Tech Auto Care keep your current vehicle running in tip top condition, so it will last as long as you need it to. Many customers have said, “my car feels like a brand new car. It hasn’t run this well in years”.

Excellence… Who earns it? How do YOU get it?

We have all seen that logo…but what does it mean? What is required to get it?  What is “behind” it?

ASE, is short for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Since 1972 the independent non-profit organization has worked to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals. Because the ASE program is primarily voluntary, ASE certification becomes a self-selecting credential that weeds out the incompetent.

ASE certification was created to help make automotive technicians better. It’s a tool that helps our technicians grow, learn and increase performance. Recent research shows that the act of preparing to take an ASE Certification exam actually improves a service tech’s knowledge and retention. Other research shows a greater first-fix accuracy, lower comebacks, and higher customer service index (CSI).

ASE Certification provides standards of knowledge the industry agrees upon and a way to identify those above-average individuals most employers are looking for. Those who pass a battery of exams (and fulfill the experience requirement) earn Master Technician status. There are specialty exams covering all major areas of repair . There are eight tests for auto technicians alone: Engine Repair, Engine Performance, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Brakes, Heating and Air Conditioning, Suspension and Steering, Manual Drive Train and Axles, and Automatic Transmissions. ASE requires technicians to re-test every five years to keep up with technology and to remain certified.

Repair establishments with at least one ASE technician are permitted to display the ASE sign. Each ASE professional is issued personalized credentials listing his or her exact areas of certification and an appropriate shoulder insignia. Technicians are also issued certificates that employers often post in the customer service area.

Come by Street Tech Auto Care and see our certifications. (You know you want to!)

What color do you see?

We have talked before about warning lights, but we wanted to go a little more in depth and give you more information about the lights, the color of the light, and what they can mean.

Remember, Color is King! Here is a thumbnail guide to actions you should take in a warning light situation.

Red indicates a potentially serious problem or safety issue. Attend to it! Red may also indicate an important reminder. Examples of Red Lights include:

Brake Light – This is an unusual case, it can mean something extremely serious, or it could just mean your parking brake is still applied slightly. If this light comes on while driving, safely pull over, and check to make sure your parking brake is not applied. If it’s not, it may indicate a more serious problem. Your car’s brakes could potentially fail. This light is different to your ABS light (see below).

Oil Pressure – This means your engine is not getting enough oil to properly lubricate it’s components. Pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so… if you don’t your car will stop for you.

SRS/Airbag light – Do you want to have an accident and NOT have your airbags deploy?

Other important red lights may alert you to charging system problems, an overheating engine, a door being open, or you need to ‘buckle up’! It may seem unusual that the seat belt light is red, but if you get in anything more than a ‘fender bender’ without a seat belt on… you will likely be killed or seriously injured. That’s pretty serious.

Yellow/orange mean something needs to be serviced or repaired soon. If it is flashing, it is important that you contact your dealer or trusted repair shop. Examples of Yellow Lights include: ABS/Anti-lock Brake System Trouble Lights. Your brakes will probably still work, but many of us have become so accustomed to cars that brake without wheel lock up, it could be dangerous.

The famous check engine light. This often means a problem with your cars electronic engine management system. It is usually safe to drive a short distance, but prolonged driving with a check engine light on could damage your car. A great example of this is a misfiring car ‘cooking’ your catalytic converter.

Other examples of yellow lights are brake pad wear warning, low tire pressure or stability system turned off.

Green or blue is telling you that a system is on or operating. These are kind of like green or blue road signs. They give you information

Examples of blue or green lights. High Beam indicators, Cruise Control active, ECO (Economy) mode active or All Wheel Drive engaged.

Of course, we only listed a few here, If you have a light on your dash, and wonder what it means…. always feel free to stop by or call us at Street Tech. We can help you figure it out, no matter what the color.

Let’s Hit The Road For The Great American Road Trip!

Memorial Day is approaching, which signals the beginning of road trip season. This summer many people will be heading out on that great American road trip! We live in a beautiful part of the world, with such wonders and great places to explore! How could you resist? Here are a few things to think about before-hand to help you get the most out of your adventures.

  • Budget– It is amazing how quickly things can add up when we are on the open road. It is a good idea to set a realistic budget for how much you can afford to spend each day on meals, lodging, and fuel.
  • Route– Plan the route to your destination and your stopping points for breaks. There is the TripTik Travel Planner (AAA.com/triptik) which allows you to map your itinerary and make adjustments at anytime. It also helps locate gas stations, campgrounds, electric-vehicle charging pods, as well as hotels and restaurants.
  • Pack snacks– You have fueled up the car, but what about those passengers? Pack a cooler stocked with sandwiches, fruit, drinks, and snacks. This will help cut down on expenses, and time consuming pit stops. This will also keep you eating healthier foods than what you will probably pick up at the gas station.
  • Tune ‘er up– Nothing can spoil a road trip faster than car trouble. When ever you bring your vehicle to Street Tech Auto Care, we always do a full courtesy inspection.  It is a good idea to schedule an oil change appointment at least a week before your departure, so we can do that vehicle inspection and check and top off all fluids. Planning ahead to have the vehicle checked will help ensure you enjoy happy trails.

Speaking of happy trails, the best road trips aren’t just traveling from point A to point B. If you see a sign that catches your eye, or if something on the side of the road intrigues you, don’t be afraid to venture off course. Sometimes the best memories and experiences come from the ride!

Gas for $1.00 a gallon?

We all know how the cost of gasoline can eat into you family’s budget, but are there ways to make that ‘bite’ a bit smaller?

Yes! Unfortunately we don’t have a time machine, and can’t get you back to buck a gallon gas, but we can trim that gas bill a bit with these helpful steps.

  • Keep your engine tuned up – A misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 30% (Fuel Savings up to $1.00 a gallon)
  • Keep your tires properly inflated – Keeping tires properly inflated, will not only make your tires last longer but they will keep you safer. Of course proper tire pressure will save you gas too! Under-inflated tires will lower your gas mileage by 0.3% for every 1 psi (pounds per square inch) pressure. Always use the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle, you can find the proper tire pressure for your vehicle on the sticker in your drivers door-jamb, or inside your trunk lid.

  • Observe speed limits – Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 55 m.p.h.
  • Drive Sensibly – Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33% at highway speeds and by 5% around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money. (Fuel Savings up to $1.00 a gallon)
  • Avoid Excessive idling – idling gets zero miles per gallon.
  • Using cruise control – Use this feature on the highway to help maintain constant speed and save gas.
  • Planning & combining trips – Combining errands into one trip saves time and money
  • Commuting – Try to stagger your work hours to avoid peak rush hours, you will spend less time sitting in traffic and consume less fuel.
  • Traveling- Unless the attached roof rack or bike rack is necessary, remove it when it isn’t being used. Those added features add up to a 5% decrease in fuel economy.
  • Lighten up – Remove extra weight from your trunk. Those golf clubs and books to be donated are eating up your gas.
  • Refuel in the early morning – When it’s colder, gasoline’s molecular structure will condense. Since you are paying by volume not weight, use science in your favor.
As we all know, the days of dollar a gallon gas are long gone… but use some of these tips, to maximize your fuel efficiency, and use those saved dollars for something fun!

*Gas savings estimates based on gas at $3.00 a gallon. Information from www.fueleconomy.gov
